IDEA2IMPACT 360: Turning Ideas into Real-World Impact

At NIST Higher Education, learning is not limited to classrooms, assignments, or examinations. With that spirit, NIST Higher Education is organizing IDEA2IMPACT 360: Lab โ€ข Tech โ€ข Market, an interdisciplinary ideathon designed to bring students from different academic backgrounds together and encourage them to transform ideas into practical, meaningful solutions.

With that spirit, NIST Higher Education is organizing IDEA2IMPACT 360: Lab โ€ข Tech โ€ข Market, an interdisciplinary ideathon designed to bring students from different academic backgrounds together and encourage them to transform ideas into practical, meaningful solutions.

The idea behind the event is simple: many real-world problems cannot be solved by one discipline alone. A scientifically sound idea may still need technology to make it accessible or scalable. A strong technological solution may fail if it does not solve a genuine problem or have a practical way to reach its users. IDEA2IMPACT 360 therefore brings together three important perspectives โ€” Lab, Tech and Market.

More Than Just a Competition

IDEA2IMPACT 360 is not simply a coding competition. It is not a traditional science exhibition, and it is not just a business-plan contest either.

It is a solution-building journey.

Students are encouraged to identify a real problem, understand it properly, explore possible solutions, apply scientific knowledge where relevant, use technology intelligently, and think about how their solution can create value in the real world. The objective is not to expect students to arrive with a perfect product or startup. What matters is the quality of their thinking, their ability to work across disciplines, and the potential impact of their idea.

How the IDEA2IMPACT 360 Journey Works

Unlike a traditional 24-hour or 36-hour hackathon, participants do not need to remain at the college continuously to develop their ideas.

The journey begins well before Pitch Day.

1. Orientation Before Form Submission

The first orientation will introduce students to the concept of IDEA2IMPACT 360 and help them understand what is expected from participating teams.

Students will learn about the Labโ€“Techโ€“Market approach, the type of problems they can work on, how interdisciplinary ideas are developed, and how ideas will eventually be evaluated.

The purpose of this first session is to help students start with the right mindset rather than simply submitting an idea without understanding the event.

2. Registration and Initial Idea Submission

After the first orientation, interested students can register through their respective departments.

Teams will begin by identifying a real-world problem and preparing an initial idea around it. They should be able to explain the problem, who is affected by it, why existing solutions may not be enough, and how science, technology and market thinking can come together in their proposed approach. These elements are also part of the event's original problem-validation framework.

3. Second Orientation After Form Submission

Once the initial submissions are received, participants will attend a second orientation.

This session will go deeper than the first one. Teams will receive clearer guidance on problem validation, interdisciplinary collaboration, idea refinement, solution development and preparation for Pitch Day.

This second interaction is important because an idea that sounds interesting at first may become much stronger when the team starts asking better questions.

Who exactly has this problem?
How serious is it?
Can the proposed solution realistically work?
What role does technology play?
Who would actually use or pay for the solution?

These are the questions that turn a general idea into a focused solution.

Essential Trainings from the College

Participants will not be left on their own after registration.

Before the final Pitch Day, NIST Higher Education will organize essential training and guidance sessions to help teams strengthen their ideas and presentation skills.

Depending on the needs of participating teams, these sessions may focus on areas such as problem solving, scientific thinking, technology and prototyping, market understanding, business-model basics, research, validation, teamwork, and pitching.

Faculty members and mentors will guide students, but the responsibility for developing the idea will remain with the team. The aim is to support students without taking ownership of their ideas away from them.

Develop Your Idea from Anywhere

After the orientations and training sessions, teams will have the flexibility to work on their ideas from anywhere.

They can meet on campus, work from home, collaborate online, conduct research, talk to potential users, improve their concept, create a prototype or model, test assumptions, and continuously refine their solution.

A prototype does not necessarily mean a fully developed commercial product. Depending on the idea, it may be a digital prototype, conceptual model, process design, demonstration, workflow, or another practical representation of the proposed solution.

What matters is that teams are able to clearly show how their idea could work and why it could create impact.

What Problems Can Students Work On?

Participants are encouraged to explore challenges within areas that connect strongly with the academic strengths of NIST Higher Education. The proposed problem domains include:

  • Digital Health & Diagnostics
  • Food Innovation, Safety & Nutrition
  • Pharma, Wellness & Preventive Care
  • Biotech & Bio-Processes
  • Sustainable Bio-Economy

These domains are deliberately broad. Students are encouraged to observe problems around them and develop solutions that are relevant to Nepal as well as the wider world.

The Power of Interdisciplinary Teams

One of the most important elements of IDEA2IMPACT 360 is collaboration between students from different academic backgrounds.

Students from BCA, BBM, BBS, MBS, Pharmacy, Food Technology, Microbiology and Biotechnology can participate in the event.

Imagine a healthcare problem being examined by a Microbiology or Pharmacy student, supported by a BCA student who understands digital technology, and strengthened by a Management student who thinks about users, cost, sustainability and market adoption.

That is the spirit of Lab โ€ข Tech โ€ข Market.

Different perspectives may challenge each other, but that is exactly where stronger ideas can emerge.

Pitch Day: Where the Journey Comes Together

The final stage of IDEA2IMPACT 360 will be Pitch Day.

Teams will present their solutions before an expert evaluation panel. The pitch will explain the problem, proposed solution, scientific or domain foundation, use of technology, market relevance, expected impact and future potential.

The original event framework proposes a 7-minute presentation followed by Q&A, allowing the jury to understand both the idea and the thinking behind it.

Evaluation will consider areas such as problem relevance and impact, scientific validity, technology integration, market and business feasibility, interdisciplinary collaboration, clarity and innovation.

The Impact Should Continue Beyond Pitch Day

IDEA2IMPACT 360 should not end when the winners are announced.

Promising teams may receive further feedback, mentoring, opportunities for showcasing their ideas, and guidance toward further development or incubation. The long-term objective is to identify ideas with genuine potential and help students continue developing them beyond the competition itself.

The first prize for the competition is NPR 20,000, while the second prize is NPR 10,000. More importantly, every participant will gain an opportunity to experience interdisciplinary teamwork, problem solving, innovation and presentation in a practical environment.

From Classroom Knowledge to Real-World Solutions

IDEA2IMPACT 360 represents the kind of learning we want to encourage at NIST Higher Education โ€” learning that connects knowledge with curiosity, collaboration and action.

Students do not need to begin with a perfect idea.

They only need to begin with a meaningful problem, the willingness to explore it, and the courage to build something better.

Registration is open through the respective departments, with the registration deadline on 19 Bhadra 2083.
